Mumbai to Introduce London-Style Pod Taxis in Bandra-Kurla Complex

Mumbai’s bustling Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), a central business district known for its vibrant commercial activity, is set to embrace a new mode of transportation—London-style pod taxis. The project, spearheaded by Sai Green Mobility in collaboration with Ultra PRT, the developers behind Heathrow Airport's pod taxi system, is poised to revolutionize urban mobility in one of the city’s busiest areas.

The innovative pod taxi system will feature 21 sleek, bite-sized vehicles operating along a 3.9-kilometer route. This route will seamlessly connect Bandra and Kurla Railway stations with BKC’s car parks, offering a streamlined and efficient travel option for thousands of commuters daily.

The initiative was officially sanctioned in March, following a thorough techno-economic feasibility study conducted by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The study aimed to address the growing traffic congestion in BKC by evaluating the area’s topography and transport needs. The findings have led to the design of a system that promises not only to alleviate traffic woes but also to enhance the overall commuting experience.

In preparation for the launch, MMRDA has finalized the fare structure for the pod taxi services. Surveys conducted among auto and bus users have informed the pricing strategy. Currently, commuters traveling from Bandra or Kurla to BKC pay approximately Rs 15.33 per kilometer for metered auto rides, with shared autos costing between ₹30 to ₹40 per passenger. Taxi fares are slightly higher, averaging Rs 18.67 per kilometer, while ride-sharing services like Ola and Uber can charge between ₹80 to ₹100 for short trips of 2-3 kilometers, depending on dynamic pricing.

The pod taxi system is expected to offer a more predictable and affordable alternative. The precise fare details will be revealed closer to the launch, but the aim is to provide a cost-effective solution that rivals existing options.

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, highlighted the significance of this project: “The Pod Taxi project in BKC marks a significant step towards enhancing urban mobility in one of Mumbai's busiest business districts. This system will not only improve last-mile connectivity but also reduce congestion and provide a modern, efficient mode of transportation for daily commuters.”

The pod taxis will offer a comfortable and efficient travel experience, catering to the high volume of passengers traveling to and from BKC’s numerous commercial and office spaces. The system’s design prioritizes ease of use and accessibility, with the goal of integrating seamlessly into Mumbai’s existing transport network.

The introduction of pod taxis in BKC represents a broader trend towards innovative urban transportation solutions designed to address the challenges of rapidly growing cities. By leveraging technology and modern design, Mumbai is positioning itself as a leader in the quest for sustainable and efficient urban mobility.

As the city awaits the official rollout of this new transportation system, the pod taxis are anticipated to become a key feature of BKC’s landscape, contributing to reduced traffic congestion and improved connectivity. The project reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban planning and promises to set a precedent for similar initiatives in other cities.

With the first phase of the pod taxi system nearing implementation, Mumbai residents and visitors alike can look forward to a smoother, more streamlined travel experience in one of the city’s most vibrant districts.
