In a groundbreaking move, a Chinese company has successfully test-flew a prototype commercial plane that can go as fast as Mach 4, which is twice as fast as the famous Concorde. Space Transportation, which is based in Beijing and is also known as Lingkong Tianxing Technology, made the exciting news on October 27, 2024, that its high-speed Yunxing prototype had finished its first test flight the day before.

The Yunxing prototype is a big step forward in the race to make air travel faster and more efficient. This jet is unique not only because of its top speed, but also because it can take off and rest vertically, which makes it a very useful plane. This jet could cut travel times between big towns by a huge amount. It can go as fast as 3,069 miles per hour and can fly up to about 65,600 feet (about 20,000 meters). With this technology, a trip from Beijing to New York, which usually takes thirteen hours, could be done in as little as two hours.

This accomplishment also comes at a very important time: people are becoming interested in supersonic flight again because of the need to cut down on the time it takes to journey long distances. Before it was taken out of service in 2003, the Concorde was the only commercial supersonic jet in regular use. However, its top speed of Mach 2 seems slow now that faster planes are coming out. Mach 4 is more than twice that speed, and the Yunxing prototype can reach it. This could mean that faster-than-sound business air travel is on the way.

But don't think you can jump on a Mach 4 jet just yet. Space transportation is still in its early stages of making progress with technology. The company wants to do more tests in November 2024, especially on the engine technology. These tests are very important to make sure that the plane can handle the stresses of supersonic flying while still keeping passengers safe and reliable.

Space Transportation has set a very high goal for the future: they want to fly a full-sized supersonic passenger jet by 2027.
